Pollens

Grasses are declining in the Lake Geneva region, thanks to abundant rainfall in recent days. Herbaceous plants begin to pollinate.

A few simple rules to make your day-to-day life easier:

  • Don’t let your clothes dry in the open air, as they’ll be covered with microscopic pollen, which will cause discomfort in your bed and on your clothes.
  • Remember to air your home during the day, but keep your bedroom windows closed at night.
  • Take a quick shower (hair and face too) in the evening as soon as you get home, to get rid of pollens clinging to your hair and clothes.
  • Put the day’s clothes immediately into a dirty laundry basket to avoid depositing pollens throughout the house.

Hymenoptera

Summer brings with it the risk of wasp and bee stings.

The most useful tips for avoiding attracting these insects are :

  • Wear light-colored clothes, don’t walk barefoot on the lawn, and avoid flowery or sweet fragrances.
  • Be very careful if you’re eating out: these insects are attracted by meat, fruit, sugars, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.
  • Immediately put away or cover dishes/drinks likely to attract them.
  • Don’t drink from a can, as a wasp may have got into it; instead, take a glass to be sure of the contents.
  • If you are allergic to Hymenoptera, carry your emergency kit with you! Don’t leave it at home.
  • A mosquito net on your bedroom window lets the air in, but not the biting insects.

Pollens

Pollens are almost completely finished for this year. Grass pollen levels are low. There is currently an average concentration of ragweed in the canton of Geneva, which will last until October.

It’s time to increase doses for patients desensitized to pollens, in order to restore the maintenance dose. This will only take a few weeks, and then you’ll have another appointment once a month.

New desensitizations

Autumn is the ideal time to start desensitization, because of the absence of pollens in the air, and in order to be protected for the following pollen season.

Allergenic desensitization is induced by gradually increasing allergen doses. Injections are generally spaced one week apart, then become monthly.
