Occurs <strong>immediately<\/strong> on contact with the allergen and gradually subsides as soon as contact ends<\/li>\n<li><u>chronic allergic rhinitis<\/u>: long-lasting nasal obstruction and secretions caused by a <strong>late<\/strong> allergic inflammatory reaction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Etiology<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><u>immediate allergic rhinitis<\/u>: usually due to pollens (seasonal exposure) or cat hair (occasional exposure)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><u>chronic allergic rhinitis<\/u>: usually due to house dust mites or cat hair (chronic exposure)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NB: beware of a non-allergic cause, such as a possible nasal deviation or polyps, inducing <u>mechanical<\/u> obstruction.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Drug treatment<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>nasal spray with anti-histamines, cromoglycates or corticoids<\/li>\n<li>if necessary, take anti-histamine tablets<\/li>\n<li>over-the-counter vasoconstrictors are not recommended, as they cause irreversible vascular damage to the nasal mucosa within a few weeks, known as &#8220;chronic rhinitis medicamentosa&#8221;.
